Soon after, the company was purchased by A.H. In 1996, the Providence Journal Company went public and sold over $100 million worth of stock. In 1925, it became the first paper to expand to cover statewide issues. During World War I, the paper declared its support for the Allied cause and gained attention because of its detailed reports on the war. In the earlier 1800s, the paper gained a reputation for supporting Republican ideology, but in 1888, the paper published an editorial that declared it would be politically independent in the future. In 1885, the Providence Printing Company became the Providence Journal Company and began publishing a Sunday edition of The Providence Journal. In 1884, the publication was incorporated into the Providence Printing Company.

John Miller, the initial owner, sold the company to Joseph Knowles and William L. In 1829, the bi-weekly publication became a daily publication and was renamed The Providence Journal and General Advertiser.

The Providence Journal was founded in 1820, with the publication of the Manufacturers’ & Farmers’ Journal, Providence & Pawtucket Advertiser.
